I am trying to install MySQL on a laptop running XP home that had a previously installed version on it. When I try to configure the server and click on Execute I get an error that says that the security setting were not applied. I turned of my Norton Antivirus and Windows Firewall. However, I still get the same error when I click retry. So I finally chose the skip button.
I then checked to see if MySQL was running in the Control Panel ->Services section and it was. I then installed MySQL administrator on the same laptop. When I tried to connect to the database I get an access error.
"Could not connect to the specified instance. MySQL Error #1045." I am able to ping the server. On running sc query MySAL it indicates that the server is running fine.
On doing a telnet localhost 3306 from the windows command prompt I am connected. What is going on?
BTW when I ran the configuration wizard it did not ask me to set a username, just a password. So I tried to connect with the username as root, with no username as well as with no username and password. None of it worked.
