Restore from MySQLDump - Truncate First?

If I've done a mysqldump of a DB and later wish to restore from that dump would I need to do a truncate or drop of the tables first to ensure a clean restore?

From what I've read it would seem that an import of a dump file into an existing database would simply insert the additional data from the dump. But this could potentially leave data entered after the mysqldump intact. So I'd end up with a merge of data from my mysqldump and what was entered after. Or, does the import process truncate/drop existing tables prior to the import?
