MySQL Log Login Attempts with out General Loging

Ok,

I am in need of some way to log the login attempts made by users without all the queries you get when ding the general log. Reason is it's a production server and the general query log slows things way down, and typically the amount of queries that go through make the log file grow outrageously fast (1GB a hour).

Now I know mysql shouldn't be open to the public, but we a lot of servers hosted in different data centers and there is a replication between them. Despite the fact all usernames are bound to set host names, I would still like to track the incoming failed login's some how.
