Yes, I looked into what you wrote and I think I have a handle on it.
The problem now is to continuously test the recovery process. You don't want to do your first recovery when you actually must do it, right?
And the next task would be to replicate the production master server to a slave. That's also require the binary log.
All that at least provides job security, even if it is not the most exciting part of the job...
