Expired Password Message in Error Log

We are frequently (multiple times an hour) seeing the following message in the .err error log:
[Note] Your password has expired. To log in you must change it using a client that supports expired passwords.
However, when querying the MySQL.user table there are no expired passwords. Is there any way to trace where this error is coming from?
