After looking through all of the solutions here, none of which worked, I checked if there was a mysql RPM package installed -- I knew there shouldn't have been because I installed from a binary (non-RPM) package. To my surprise, mysql 5 was installed. Apparently, this was conflicting with my previously installed mysql 4. When I removed the RPM package and rebooted mysql worked again.

I don't know how the RPM package got there. I couldn't find the .RPM file. How likely is this to happen to someone else? I don't know!
