MySQL --> server slowdown?

So, I know next to nothing about MySQL, but I just set up a MySQL server in order to install WordPress. Using phpMyAdmin, I created three separate databases for three separate weblogs. Now, when I go to any of the pages in the weblog (or to the administration area), it takes FOREVER to load. I called our web host, and they told me that because it had to query the database every time it loaded, it would just be slow. But I find this very difficult to believe, since I know for a fact that there are weblogs based on MySQL that run at a normal speed. Is running three databases on the same server that hosts our (huge) website a bad idea? Any idea or solutions someone can propose? I'd really appreciate any help! Thanks.
