These are large tables with about 150 columns each. I'd rather not post the whole schemas if I can prevent it.

I took the create table statements, changed only the table names & created new empty (test) tables. When I run the merge create (with the test tables in the union) & query the new merge table, it works fine. If I change the table names in the merge create back to the original "live" tables, queries on the merge table fail again with the same error.

Could it be an issue of table size? Each has around 1 million rows, about 1 GB each.
