Hmmm... It does seem to be gone in 5.5.
I _think_ you can install multiple versions and have them running simultaneously if you
* Use different directory trees
* Use different my.cnf files
* Use TCP/IP connections, but with different ports (other than the default 3306)
Another approach would be VMs (or other virtual mechanism).
