Column names should document what they refer to, so start_timestamp &c would be better.
You're deliberately avoiding MySQL timestamps?

More important than size is whether required queries run efficiently, and the way to maximise that possibility is to normalise correctly, then fill the thing with test data, benchmark the queries, and tune.
