CAVEAT: All of these comments are my _opinion_.

There are lots of DBA jobs out there. (I get a lot of calls.) Some are OK with work-from-home. What version of MySQL is the certification test on? It should cover 5.5 or 5.6. I have not heard of any openings that 'demand' certification. (But I have not pursued openings enough to get to that level of detail.) Windows is ok for casual users; Unix is a must for serious MySQL users. So aim for LAMP, not WAMP. Install some version of MySQL (even if WAMP) at home and use it as heavily as you can. Do ALTERs; see what happens; etc, etc.

Another tip: Look at questions on this set of forums or stackoverflow (tag=mysql). Do the research / experimentation / etc to come up with answers. Post them. Check for other answers. This is the real world. Certification questions may or may not be 'real world'. (A few hundred tables on my MySQL exist just to experiment with questions on forums.)
