This problem was solved after a little bit of tinkering. To anyone who may have this problem and not found a solution:

The GUI tools connected fine with users other than 'root', so I remembered 'root', by default, isn't allowed to connect to the server from any host other than 'localhost'. When you disable the DNS lookup, the server forces 'root' to log in from '127.0.0.1', so you just have to grant permissions to root to connect from that ip address.
