Hourly Mysql backup

Hi,

I've a question about making Mysql backups and in case of a disaster loose at max 1 hour of activity.
My concrete question is: is it safe (performance wise) to execute every hour a 'fluhs-logs' command and rsync the the binary-logs files to an external backup device?
What could be the drawbacks of such a procedure?

I know about slave setups but the customer wants the backup to be kept externally.

Thanks in advance.

regards,

Ivan
