on Windows, detect MySQL Connector Installed

I'm writing a fat client program that sits on top of Windows and may connect to a local or remote MySQL DB. My question is, what is the best way to determine whetther or not the MySQL Connector is installed? There are some registry keys, but what I've found would tie my to v3.51 of the connector. Any ideas? I'm using VB, but that shouldn't make a difference for the purposes of this question.
