type confusion in asp

Hello everyone,

I'm having problems with the odbc driver returning bad datatypes in asp. often, the driver does not return numeric data types for numeric data. here is an example:

<%
set db = server.CreateObject("adodb.connection")
set rs = server.CreateObject("adodb.recordset")
db.open application("dsn")
rs.open "select count(*) as c from customers",db

response.write rs("c") 'returns 11 on my server

response.write rs("c")+1 'error!?!? i dont want to put CLNG before every single numeric field!

x=rs("c")
response.write typename(x) 'error: Variable uses an Automation type not supported in VBScript
%>

running ado 2.8. any ideas?
