Isn't ODBC is famous for slow inserts & updates? My understanding is that the wide-compatibility architecture is one of the factors that constrains write performance. A Connector author will have have more info.

Did you try multi-row inserts as a workaround? See https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=68826 for a possibly relevant discussion.
