Thank you for your response. Wish I had had it sooner! I finally wiped my computer, reinstalled windows and Office 365 and the Access db still couldn't connect. I finally did a deeper dive in researching it, and installed c++ redistributable 2010 and the latest cumulative c++ redist. Finally it worked. What I still don't understand is why it had suddenly stopped working (in the middle of the day on an unused computer) only on my laptop but not on my desktop nor on other users' computers. I shall try the 5.3 to be sure it will work without changing the vba.
