It's not about the connection not working. That's fine. The data source works as intended, once configured. Also connections from applications, which user their own, different credentials are O.K.
It's about the GUI presented inside odbcad32 to manage mysql data sources. When configuring the data source, it does not present the TCP/IP Server name and the password gets removed. Sometimes even the user name is missing when configuring an existing data source, which you can see clearly inside the registry key you've mentioned as well.
I take it, this very data source GUI is defined by mysql/oracle and behaves strangely and slightly annoying. And also it presents options, which do not apply to the newest connector versions 8.4x and 9.x. (namely: allow reconnect and charset)
