ODBC Connector almost always alters it's name and path

The ODBC Connector sometimes gets updated from administrators, when a new version is available. That's commendable. Always the newest Connector is recommended.

But since the new versioning scheme is active, the "newest" connector always alters it's installation path and Name including the first decimal as from 9.6 to 9.7.
In order to get a working environment, also all existing ODBC data sources require to be modified to use the new version as well.

When updating only to minor versions as 8.0.x, the installation path and Name (in "ODBC Data Sources") is kept.

Would there be a strategy to be able to update the connector without constantly touching the data source definitions?

Such drivers from Microsoft e.g. mostly retain their general names and access, even with major versions. Updating a driver does not need to modify the data sources then.
