Dumb query I know, but why do this?

I changed around my program to do something similar, it takes an extra 4 lines of code, and seems to buy me precious little, I guess the only advantage is that I could have a slightly more generic select statement and would only need to change the param.value if I wanted to change what I was using the select for, but given that changing the select text string isn't exactly hard anyways...

Anyone able to give me some reasonings (sorry, new ato all this, so trying to understand why a particular method might be recommended over other methods).
