Hey-
I don't think he (Reggie) has released the version with the character set in the connection code, at least as of 11/12 1 AM EST.
However, what worked for me was to change my entire table to utf8. This way it is the same character set as the .NET connector uses by default. Unless you are doing something were you store different languages, or something that deals with character sets, that should work for you.
