Reading single quotes in mediumtext field

When I attempt to place a single quote character from a mediumtextfield into an asp.net web control. It is not rendered properly.
This happens only with single quotes which are written to the datbase using the escape ('' - two single quotes) sequence.
Data written directly into the fields on the database using phpmyadmin interface are not affected, and are rendered correctly.
The problem does not arise in char fields - only in textfields.
Is this a bug in the connector?
