Maybe you can explain.

Someone told me to start the JRE with '-Dfile.encoding=ISO-8859-1', and now it works. Why do I need this setting?

My tables are in latin1 format, and the connection is also in latin1 format. I checked what the default file.encoding on my system is, and it's UTF8. I'd have though this would not be a problem, but found out it is.
