I think this should be mentioned in the "Upgrading from an Older Version"-section of the Connector/J documentation...
Since the older (3.0) version didn't throw the truncation exception they suddenly started to pop up after I started using 3.1.10. In my case it was caused by trying to add unallowed values to an ENUM column.
