I had a similar problem with yours, but caused by the getConnection statement. not because of new Connection() statement you wrote.

Could you please tell me which OS used where the mysql server is installed. If it is UNIX/Linux especially Debian, you should check the /etc/host.allow configuration. It must have an entry which tells which host is really allowed to access the db server.
