DATE_FORMAT not working with connector/j 3.1.7

Basically, a bug report by another user sums it up:

We are seeing the exact same problem. DATE_FORMAT in 3.1.7 returns what looks like a pointer of some sort, and is not of type String.

The className is '[B' instead of java.lang.String

When we revert back to the 3.0 series of connector/j, we start receiving Strings correctly again.

We are use mysql 4.1.8
