You are a legend!

The classpath was fine, however there was a copy of mysql-connector-java-3.0.1-beta-bin hidden in one of the folders subordinate to where my test program was saved.

I now have a "java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver" error, however I will read through the information posted by other users on the forum before using up more of your time.
