SSL problems with certificates

Dear all

I'm successfully using SSL for connections to one of our servers (5.0.51a on ubuntu), both with the regular shell client as well as ODBC. Certificates are being created according to the mysql manual. Both issuer and subject content are checked for connections.
If I try to connect with JDBC, it only works when setting requirements to ssl only. As soon as I set ssl_type to X509, the connection is refused. I created truststore/keystore according to the mysql manual. Debugging shows the correct keystore/truststore files being used.
Is anyone successfully using SSL with JDBC? How do you create your jsse certs?
