connection hanging (slack ware 9.0 linux)

I am having an extremeley strange problem that I hope somebody can help me with. I have created an application that connects to MYSQL that works without a flaw connecting to my xp machine, but does not work connecting to my slackware 9.0 linux box.
The problem:
The application hangs without throwing an exception on the following line:
“this.theConnection = DriverManager.getConnection(url, prop);”
What could be causing this behavior?
