Okay, thanks for the clarification about autoReconnect, I won't use it. As it turns out, the test mysql cluster I was using is configured to time out queries after 5 seconds, though for some reason the error did not surface until after 15 minutes. I was pointed to the correct cluster to use and we stopped seeing those errors. I also verified that the query execution time on the correct database instance was within expectations.
