You've tried c/J 5.1.46, what's the result?

I can't say anything about c/J 3.1 or 5.0.
C/J 5.1 keeps the code for compliance with MySQL 4.1 though we don't test it regularly because this server is EOL.
C/J 8.0 cuts the old MySQL versions support so you can't use it I guess.

So, the better choice would be to use one of c/J 5.1 releases. If latest ones don't work for you, you could try something older, like 5.1.2x, we were testing them with MySQL 4.1 more frequently.
