For ASCII characters it will use just one byte. I've had no problem passing an 80+ character string. Other times I get the truncation error for 80+ characters, and sometimes for ones much shorter.

I just started looking at whether or not I might be having a driver/Java compatibility issue. We're currently on v5.1.28 of the connector, but using Java 8. I don't know why we're on such an old version! If I look at the release dates of 5.1 versions, 5.1.28 technically precedes the release of Java 8; it was originally being used with Java 6.
