Hey there,
I am running Mysql Workbench on the same machine.
The weird thing is that I have done this before and it worked fine. I even built the same thing on another computer which appears to be running fine currently.
One thing that may have influenced this problem is that I went and changed the password to "password". Though that's how I can log in through workbench.
From what I can see, the connection variable is always outputting to null.
You mention an exception stack trace. Can I use this to figure out in more detail why the connection is returning null?
