XML from mysql tables

hi,
i am new to mysql.I want to create an xml file from the tables in mysql.I have used --xml syntax.The syntax i found was for shell prompt but i tried it.I typed command as
mysql>--xml 'select * from example >file.xml;

i am not getting error but where is the file getting created.Am i using right syntax?If there is any other way other than php please do suggest.
