Are you using OleDb or ODBC (or something else) to connect to the database? Which version of the MySQL server do they have?
I use Host Excellence (www.hostexcellence.com) to host my site. They permit outside access and so I can connect to my database with the MySQL Query Browser, Administrator and the command line utility. I can't imagine life without this ability!
