version compatabilty and mySQL-db

I am having trouble sorting out the versions of the software.

I need python, plus mySQL plus MySQL-db as binding/interface to connect them, correct?

So far it seems there is:

MySQL db version 1.2.3 for python 2.5 / mySQL 5.1

or

a less official version for python 2.6 / mySQL 5.0 or something like that?

what's the set up you're using, or which would you recommend?

I have found someone working on some interesting data at work (a genetics research lab) and he says he will let me have a go at it, but he would be doing it in Perl, so he may have a different optimal version of MySQL, how cross-compatible are they? Could we have two versions on one computer without a mess?

Thanks for your help.
