calling external functions( Perl) from inside trigger

hi,

i am working on a grid project and we are planning to use mysql 5.0.

we are using perl for inserting records into the database.

i want to know can we call perl functions or any other external language functions from inside triggers and can we mail any person depending upon the conditions inside the triggers.
