hm ... what mysql version?

and can you try to create a short reproducible example
showing the problem? Just the CREATE TABLE statement,
a few INSERT statements and a SELECT showing the
unexpected results?

Knowing the servers character set settings may also
help, you can check these with "SHOW VARIABLES LIKE
'%char%';" and "SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%collat%';"
