Running script on another server

I am having trouble connecting to a database which is located on a different server than my PHP script. How do I indicated the host? www.myserver.com? or www.url.num.bers.xxx.com? When I try either one is gives me an error message
" mysql_connect(): Unknown MySQL Server Host"
