Hey, I have the exact same problem and I can't find a solution. I do know that we can rule out phpmyadmin, because it happens with other webapps as well (such as WordPress and PHPBB2). I think it is a bug in PHP, there's a report on it (http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=26286), but the sad part is, the report has status no feedback since 2003.
I voted on the bug, I think you should too, it might get the attention of some developpers.
