What do you do with the database user passwords?

Hi everyone. I am fairly new to using SQL, so go easy on me. What I would like to know is how or where do you put the connection username and password in order to stop them been found and keep it secure?? I currently have my database connection code in a php include, but I am not happy leaving the password in this file where a hacker might be able to obtain it and view my code plus login details.
The database system I am designing is a many user system. The users will be assigned roles. Thanks in advance.
