It pretty much has to go to a separate page, unless you want get into something really complex and unnecessary, like java perhaps. It doesn't have to be much of a page as far as the user is concerned, doesn't even have to have anything displayed unless things go wrong. I see a number of sites doing this sort of thing. If you do it right, this page does the validation, drops cookie(s), and loads the home page in such a way so the back button goes back to the login page.
