Changing max_allowed_packet on a shared server

Hi, I was wondering whether there was a way to change the max_packet_size on a shared server? I'm running PHP 4.3.11 and MySQL 4.0.16, but cannot access the my.cnf file. If any more details are needed, please let me know; I'm very much a newbie with this. Any help will be much appreciated.
