which sql server should i use?

hi guys. i am developing my thesis and i am planning to make a server-client system. so that office A will hold the server and office B, C, D, etc will connect to it. any add, edit, delete done in office B,C,D will reflect on the single database. is sql server the right application for it? cause i don't have any idea on that. btw my front end is vb 6.0 and back end database is mysql. my thesis is criminal records in our police department. and we have like <10 precincts in the city. hope you guys can help me.
i need to know which version should i download. the 2005 or 2008.
any tutorial links will also be greatly appreciated.
