Local mySQL to Backend SQL Server

Does anyone have any expereinces they could share on using MySQL as a client side (portable) Dbase that would connect and sycnh with a backend MS SQL database. Would love to remove MS from the back but we can't until other decisions are made.
All help and insight is greatly appreciated.
