Microsoft SQL Migration Schemas Selection Empty

trying to migrate SQLServer to MySQL. There seems to be a problem with migrating remote databases. The SQLServer is on a different server. ODBC works, I can write programs to select and display data. The Workbench migration wizard accepts the ODBC connection as well but the Schema Selection is empty (yes, I omitted the database name).
I have a local copy of the SQLServer (with example data), and when I try to migrate that, the Schema Selection page shows databases to choose from.
Is it possible that the wizard only accepts local databases? then I'm fucked.
