Well, to answer my own question, if I set 'linesize 80' (actually, this is the default) in SQL*Plus, then Oracle wraps the output into 80 char lines and the 'mysql' command-line tool can read this format without problems.
However, it still seems to me that an input buffer frozen at 80 chars is a historical relic and certainly is not suited to an "enterprise" product.
Also, the error reporting with the dinging bell is pretty hokey.
