We are having a similar problem creating a db link in Oracle 10g using Connector/ODBC 5.1.5 to a MySQL 5.1.31 db on Linux.

It works for numeric types and string columns that use the default collation. The problem is I am using the latin1 case sensitive collation so the Oracle people will feel at home.
