Porting procedures - SYSTEM function

In porting some stored procedures from Informix to MySQL
it appears that MySQL does not have an equivalent function
to the Informix SYSTEM function. Is this correct? Or is
there some other way to invoke an external executable from
inside a MySQL procedure?
