ODBC Connector Creation Issue

Hello all,
I'd like to use MySQL as the backend for either an Excel or Access front end and I am using this tutorial as a guide:

mysql_wp_Excel_guide.en (Unfortunately I cannot find the link back .. but I downloaded it form the mysql site somewhere.)

My specific question has to do more with crating a "generic/general ODBC" connection on my Windows (7) workstation as an administrator. I was able to download and install the connection package successfully. However, after I fill out the form to input the actuall connection credentials to mysql (which is localhost for now) I get strange errors which then result in Access or Excel not being able to pick them up in their respective ODBC lists.

The error message says somthing along the lines of: "Cannot Create DSN
file". It wasn't very informative...

Does anyone know about this process of making these ODBC connection instances?
Thanks
-K
